CHANGE TO ASLA EMERITUS PROGRAM
Beginning Jan 1, 2010 there will be a change to the ASLA Emeritus program.
The ASLA Board of Trustees approved the change to the Emeritus bylaw (504)
at their September 2009 Annual Meeting. The changes are to the eligibility
criteria, benefits and application procedure. The changes take effect on
Jan 1, 2010. Please take the time to carefully read the information below.
The change in the eligibility requirements is with the addition that a member
must be of age to collect FULL Social Security benefits. The four eligibility
criteria are below:
You are currently a Fellow or Full member of ASLA
You have been a member for twenty-five (25) or more years continuously
You are of age to collect full Social Security retirement benefits
You are fully retired from active practice
There is one change in benefits for the members applying for and approved
for Emeritus status beginning Jan 1, 2010; they must pay for their subscription
for Landscape Architecture magazine (LAM). All other benefits remain (voting
eligibility, access to member’s only web pages, use of designation,
etc). This change in the LAM subscription benefit ONLY applies to future
Emeritus members beginning Jan 1, 2010 – all current Emeritus are
grandfathered and will not be invoiced for their LAM benefit. I must stress
that point. This ONLY applies to Emeritus members who have applied for and
been processed after Jan 1. Current Emeritus members have been grandfathered
and will not be charged for their LAM subscription.
And, finally, this last change was at the request of last year’s Chapter
Presidents Council (CPC); it is a change to the application procedure. Chapter
Presidents no longer need to submit a letter of support verifying a member’s
retirement status. Beginning Jan 1 members interested in applying for emeritus
status must complete the attached form. The form requires their signature
to verify they meet the four eligibility requirements and should they return
to active practice, they must notify the national office.
Please keep in mind the changes outline above do not take effect until Jan
1, 2010. If you have been asked to submit a letter of support for an Emeritus
request, I encourage you to submit that letter as soon as possible.
Attached is the Emeritus Application for your review. Please feel free to
